Killer Interludes (Pt. I)

One of the things I enjoy the most in songs is interesting and unexpected interludes in the middle of them. This kind of interludes usually doesn't have solos, it's more about the unusual structure of it, the sequence of riffs or variations of themes or melodies. Here are some good examples of that.

Epica - Sancta Terra

I find the small interlude going from 3:17 to 3:57 great and fun. It has a great melody at the begining and then repeting at the end with a little bridge in between. It sounds straight-forward at first but when one tries to count to it, the different time signatures are evident. There are some 3/4 and 2/4 put here and there, here is the structure:

Mastodon - March Of The Fire Ants

I realize that I'm crazy about this type of sections in music with this song. The section going from 2:27 to 4:12 is awesome, it's half in 4/4 and half in 3/4, there are some intersting harmonies between both guitars (something that Mastodon would perfect in the following records). Besides, the song is low, the 6 strings guitars are tuned to A.

Dream Theater - Glass Prison

Of course, I had to put something from Dream Theater. This was one of the first songs with an interlude like this I'm talking about. The section goes from 11:10 to 12:49. It's a frantic, non-lineal insane sequence of interwined riffs, it's tripping! 

Mis discos favoritos del 2018

Este año me propuse escuchar cuanto disco nuevo de música que me llamara la atención. El año pasado sólo escuche 5 o 6 discos nuevos, por lo que este año quise escuchar los nuevos discos de bandas que me gustan, y algunos de nuevas bandas. 

Hice una hoja de cálculo en excel para importar las puntuaciones y reproducciones de estos discos, desde la librería de itunes (que es donde escucho siempre música). Esto con la finalidad de disminuir la subjetividad en los resultados finales.

Estos son los resultados:

1. Orphaned Land - Unsung Prophets and Dead Messiahs. 

Descubrí a esta de Israel en el 2013, su música es una combinación de metal sinfónico con metal progresivo y música de medio oriente. Su disco anterior, All is one, me encantó y pensé que no lo iban a superar con este pero lo hicieron. Este disco para mi es perfecto: la letra y la música. Es díficil escoger unas pocas favoritas de este disco, pero nombraré The Cave, The Manifest y Chains fall to gravity.

2. Amorphis - Queen of time

Una banda nueva para mi, ya había escuchado de ellos desde hace años e incluso me gustaban algunas canciones aisladas, pero este es el primer disco completo que escucho de ellos. Me llamo la atención porque leí muy buenas reseñas sobre él, otro disco perfecto de inicio a fin. Es una mezcla de Metal melódico con un poco de progresivo y melodías folclóricas. La cereza en el pastel es Anneke van Giersbergen cantando en una canción de este disco. Mis favoritas: Amongst Stars, The Bee, Wrong Direction.

3. Haken - Vector

Una de mis bandas favoritas de la actualidad y mi segunda banda favorita de progresivo (sólo detrás de Dream Theater). Tienen un nuevo disco y siguen sin decepcionar, no es mi favorito de ellos hasta el momento (ese es The Mountain), sin embargo es un gran disco, sin ninguna canción mala en él. Es un disco muy corto aunque muy denso en partes. Canciones favoritas: Cell Divides, Puzzle Box, The Good Doctor.

 

4. Avatar - Avatar Country

Descubrí a esta banda hace dos años, hay muchas canciones que me han gustado de ellos, pero hasta este disco me ganaron totalmente. Su música es una mezcla de Death Metal melódico, groove metal y un poco de Avant-garde. Además sus guitarristas son muy buenos y tienen solos y riffs muy interesantes. Canciones favoritas: Legend of the King, The King welcomes you to Avatar Country, A Statue of the King.

5. Ghost - Prequelle

 

Otro gran disco de Ghost. Mucha gente critica a esta banda por que la música no es lo suficientemente pesada de acuerdo a su imagen. Pero ese nunca ha sido el punto de esta banda, lo suyo son la mezcla de riffs de metal clásico de los 70s y 80s con letras satánicas y melodicas vocales muy pegajosas. Este disco vuelve a tener todo eso. Canciones favoritas: Dance Macabre, Pro Memoria, Miasma.

No tengo tiempo para escribir sobre todos los 25 discos, pero en general me gustaron bastante.

Running 2018

I love running and this is my third year doing it regularly. This was the year of my first marathon, I trained for almost 6 months and I made it! I ran my third half marathon aswell.

Мои собаки

These are my dogs and I absolutely love them. From left to right:

• Lucas (Лукаc). He has been with us since the last days of December 2017. He was a stray dog in our neighborhood, he came to us on a very cold night and he was starving. Now he is batshit crazy and he's happy. We love him!
• Puchi (пучи). My sister and my mother rescue him in our home town. He is one athletic dog! He loves running and howling. He's has run a half marathon (21K) with me, we did 1h55m, not too bad! 
• Coso (косо). He was our first dog, he's very special, he's like our own son that we've never had. He's a spoiled child! He's also a runner, he ran the same half marathon Puchi did, he run with María and finished in 2h20min, not bad for their first attempt. 

This day was a very happy one... Picnic with the human-canine family! 

Dream Theater - Regression

Regression is the first song off the 1999 Dream Theater album Scenes from a Memory. I made this cover video using our new Ukulele and the music app Samplewiz. 

I used these instruments because I'm living in Cuernavaca for a few months and they're all I could take with me.

I used the video editing software Shotcut.

Dream Theater - Octavarium

Teníamos mucho tiempo queriendo tocar esta parte del Intro de "Octavarium" de Dream Theater, una de nuestras canciones favoritas. Hoy nos acordamos y lo grabamos. 

In other words: We don't even like Dream Theater that much but we had a guitar and a flute, so what the fuck?

Mastodon y Neil deGrasse Tyson

En los pasados Grammys Mastodon ganó el grammy Best Metal Performance con la canción "Sultan's Curse" (por cierto, excelente canción y album). Cuando estaba viendo el video de su discurso, mientras bajaban a recibir el premio vi algo muy curioso:

Pasaron junto a Neil deGrasse Tyson, son personas que no esperaba ver en el mismo lugar.

Mis discos favoritos del 2017

Este año hubo varios albums que me gustaron, mis 5 favoritos, en orden, son:

1. Diablo Swing Orchestra - Pacifisticuffs. Una de mis bandas favoritas desde que los conocí en 2007 (Con su primer disco The Butcher's Ballroom). La música es una mezcla de muchas cosas: Metal, Swing, Jazz, entre otros. Su último disco fue Pandora's Piñata, en el 2012, así que fue una larga espera para este nuevo disco. Este nuevo álbum es muy bueno, creo que no llega a superar a los anteriores, pero esto debido solamente a que tiene varias canciones muy cortas de transición entre canciones más largas. Estas mini-canciones no aportan mucho, en mi opinión, al flujo del disco. Por lo demás, el álbum es excelente. La banda sigue explorando nuevos estilos (por ejemplo en The Age of Vulture Culture y Superhero Jagganath). Además, la nueva vocalista Kristin Evegård encaja perfectamente y aporta mucha diversidad a las canciones. No puedo esperar a verlos por primera vez en vivo en la gira de este disco.
   
2. Alestorm - No Grave but the Sea. Descubrí esta banda hace un par de años, cuando empecé a escuchar Folk Metal (con Turisas principalmente). Ya es una de mis bandas favoritas y este año sacaron disco, es muy bueno. Son una banda muy fácil de escuchar y divertida, con melodías muy pegajosas y buenos riffs. Las letras, como siempre, hablan de piratas (un tema que siempre me ha atraido). Vinieron a México este año pero no pude ir a verlos. Mis canciones favoritas del disco son: Mexico, Alestorm y Fucked with an anchor.
   
3. The Night Flight Orchestra - Amber Galactic. La banda de hard rock de Björn (vocalista de Soilwork), David (guitarrista de Soilwork) y Sharlee (bajista de Arch Enemy). La música está muy influenciada por la música de los 80s, con grandes coros y la voz siempre genial de Björn. Descubrí esta banda en el 2016, al responder preguntas sobre Soilwork para el meet & greet que gané para el concierto de Soilwork en México. Su primer disco (Internal Affairs) es uno de mis discos favoritos de todos los tiempos y este nuevo disco es muy bueno, en mi opinión no es mejor que el primero, pero sí mejor que el segundo (Skyline Whispers). Mis canciones favoritas: Midnight Flyer, Jennie, Something Mysterious.
   
4. Ayreon - The Source. Ayreon es una de mis bandas favoritas de metal/rock progresivo, es el proyecto de Arjen Lucassen, uno de mis músicos favoritos. Cada disco tiene muchos vocalistas invitados y este es uno de los discos que tiene mayor cantidad de mis vocalistas favoritos: James Labrie (Dream Theater), Simone Simons (Epica), Floor Jansen (Nightwish), Tobias Sammet (Edguy, Avantasia), Tommy Karevik (Kamelot) y Russell Allen (Symphony X). Entre los músicos invitados están: Paul Gilbert, Guthrie Govan y en la flauta, como siempre, Jeroen Goossens. Este disco es una precuela de uno de mis discos favoritos: 01011001. Cada disco de Ayreon cuenta una parte de una sola historia y este cuenta la primer parte de toda la historia de la raza Forever (aquí hay un resumen con toda la historia). Mis canciones favoritas son: The Day That the World Breaks Down, Everybody Dies, Run! Apocalypse! Run! y Planet Y Is Alive!
   
5. Mastodon - Emperor of Sand. En mi opinión Mastodon nunca ha sacado un disco que no sea muy bueno y esta vez no es la excepción. Otro gran disco de esta banda muy única en cuanto a su sonido. Mis canciones favoritas: Show yourself, Ancient Kingdom y Jaguar God.
   

Hubo algunos otros que también fueron muy buenos: Leprous - Malina, VUUR - In this moment we are free, The Dark Element - The Dark Element.

El primer artículo de María

María participó el año pasado en el encuentro de jovenes investigadores de la Universidad de Guanajuato. En este encuentro presentó su trabajo de investigación que hizo con el Dr. Alfonso Pérez Sánchez. El trabajo es un analisis estadistico de varias interpretaciones de la Sonata para Flauta y Piano de Francis Poulanc. En diciembre finalmente se publicó el artículo, i'm proud of you María! your first paper! El artículo se puede ver aqui.

Pi day

Hoy es el dia de pi. Hay muchas cosas que decir sobre este número irracional, hoy sólo hablaré sobre un hecho: La expansión decimal del número no sólo no es periodica (es decir, no hay ningún lugar a partir del cual la expansión de dígitos sea una secuencia que se repite), sino que cualquier sucesión finita de dígitos que se nos ocurra está en algún lugar de la expansión. 

Esto tiene implicaciones asombrosas, no sólo podemos encontrar números de telefono o fechas de nacimiento. También podemos encontrar secuencias más largas, por ejemplo una novela en la codificación ASCII, o una imagen codificada con un mapa de bits. 

En esta página podemos buscar nuestra secuencia finita favorita de dígitos en la expansión de pi. Por ejemplo, una de mis fechas favoritas 28082009 (28 de agosto del 2009) se encuentra en la posición #199080654 de la siguiente forma:

Como dije al principio, hay muchas cosas que decir sobre este número, pero por algún lado hay que empezar. Ya iré contando más cosas.

And The Druids Turn To Stone

En los últimos meses me he puesto a escuchar toda la discografía de Ayreon, sólo conocía los últimos dos discos (The Human Equation y The Theory of Everything). Empecé desde el semestre pasado a escuchar todos los discos, dedicándole un par de meses a cada uno, empezando desde el principio "The Final Experiment". En otro post podría hablar mucho sobre Ayreon, la historia común que narran todos los discos y por qué me gusta tanto. 

Esta vez sólo quiero hablar un poco sobre una canción del último disco que he escuchado "The Universal Migrator Part I: The Dream Sequencer". La canción es And The Druids Turn To Stone.

El disco habla sobre una persona viviendo en Marte, la cual puede experimentar sus vidas pasadas, mediante un dispositivo llamado "The Dream Sequencer". Esta persona es el último humano con vida, en cada canción va recorriendo sus vidas anteriores. En una de sus vidas anteriores fue un Druida en el año 2800 B.C., en esta canción narra como fue creado Stonehenge. Los druidas se juntaron en este lugar y mediante un ritual se transformaron en piedras, quedándose en este lugar para siempre. 

Siempre he estado muy en contra de las hipótesis que se proponen para explicar fenómenos o eventos que aún no tienen explicación (o incluso que si la tienen). Cosas como "los alienigenas ancestrales" y cualquier tipo de pseudo-ciencia.

Sin embargo, siempre he tenido fascinación por este tipo de explicaciones como ejercicios mentales o como historias de fantasía. No tengo problemas con esto cuando se presentan como ficción, mi problema es cuando pretender ser explicaciones científicas y reales. 

Bueno, con este disclaimer en mente, puedo decir que me encanta la letra de esta canción, se me hace una explicación muy romántica del origen de este lugar. La letra es esta:

Episode of War EP

In 2014 me and my band (De la morte noire) went into the studio and record our first professionally EP, "Episode of War", it has 6 songs:

In 2006 we self-recorded our first album, "A rose for your heart". I personally love that album, I wrote all the music (except "Don't go away", written by Ismael and Sabino). I wrote some of those songs during a really tough time with my then-girlfriend. You can download the album here (and there is a review here). 

During 2009 and 2010 we started recording our second album but we never finished it due to some line-up changes. But we recorded 6 songs. You can download the album here.

After that album we had a massive line up change and we enter the third phase of the band's life, we seemed to define our sound. Everything was looking great, we wrote some new songs. Then we entered the studio and recorded the new EP (we could only afford to record 5 songs). 

After we were done recording and had the EP ready we faced new difficulties and problems. Long story short, the band went into hiatus and we never properly released the EP. We had a plan about how we want to release it, but since it's not gonna happen, I want to put the songs out there one way or the other. So, here they are...

Una de mis piezas de música favorita siempre ha sido el tema del videojuego de Sunset Riders. Desde que lo escuché por primera vez me cautivó. Siempre había querido tocarlo, hasta hace poco lo recordé y lo hice. Para tocarlo usé la aplicación de iOS Samplewiz, aquí está el video.

Teníamos mucho tiempo queriendo tocar y grabar esta canción María y yo. Es una canción que ha sido muy especial para nosotros durante todos los años que hemos estado juntos. La conocí porque a María le gustaba desde antes, ha sido de la música que me ha heredado. It's always a pleasure to play with you María, so without further ado here it is:

The end of an era

Después de 1492 dias en la Orquesta Sinfónica Estudiantil de la Universidad de Guanajuato, María ha terminado con esa etapa de su vida, o al menos eso parece. Ha llegado el tiempo de buscar nuevos desafios y metas.

Ha sido una etapa que yo disfrute mucho, siendo su fan #1 siempre disfrute de cada concierto que pude acompañarla. Su debut fue el 23 de Agosto del 2010 en el Teatro Juarez, tocando el Huapango de Moncayo.

Desde ese dia vi como fue mejorando como flautista, hasta ser primera flauta. Nunca olvidaré su primer concierto como primera flauta, el 15 de Febrero del 2015 en Irapuato:

La escuché tocar muchas piezas que se convertirían en varias de mis piezas favoritas: El Huapango, el Danzón 2 de Arturo Marquez, El concierto para trompeta de Haydn, la sinfonía 104 de Haydn, Sviridov, Pedro y el lobo, y muchas más. Mi concierto favorito: Cuando tocaron el danzón en el convento en Irapuato el 29 de Septiembre del 2010, y cuando la última vez que tocó Sviridov (¡te luciste!).

Estoy orgulloso de tí María, siempre serás mi flautista favorita y esperaré con ansias cuando vuelvas a tocar en una orquesta. Mientras seguiré disfrutando de tus muchas presentaciones.

Music from the past (pt 1)

Music can evoke such strong and vivid memories. We all have songs that take us to very specific periods of our lives. These post will be a compilation of songs (or albums) that remind me of certain days. So this is part I:

Orphanage - All is one

 

 

This is the first album I heard from this great band, it is such a perfect album, I love every song to death. The album's lyrics (as the rest of the band's catalogue) talk about how different religions in the middle east are the same and people shouldn't fight over these matters. I listened to this album non stop over the summer break of 2014, I was finishing my master's degree thesis. I had to finish before my advisor went on a sabbatical leave, so I stay for the summer in Guanajuato finishing the thesis. Everybody had left Guanajuato (including my then girlfriend Maria and Coso), I felt really lonely. I spent my days going from home to school and almost nothing else; I remember doing these horrible and really long calculations, proving some difficult propositions. Anyway, I remember the long bus rides listening to this album (specially "A simple man", "All is one", "Brother"). But the song that really touched my soul and still makes feel like that summer is "As I stare at the ocean alone". It made me miss even more Maria and Coso, my favorite lines:
